An evening with Björn Jentsch-versatile sound designer and film composer

I met Björn just recently on March 23 at the closing party of Filmfest Bremen. The event took place at the Institut Français, film professionals where gathering and celebrating their films, discussions going on about upcoming projects and most surely about next festival to attend. And then I saw, no first I heard the piano, and looked for the guy who interrupted our so intellectual conversations. This is when I first acknowledge Björn. He was masterfully improvising on the piano. And not only, playing also film music we all know. It took not long and all so distinguished filmmakers, including myself were on the dancefloor, immersing ourself in the music and even tap dancing like in the 1972 American musical period drama Cabaret!

Björn Jentsch is a versatile sound designer and music composer based in Bremen. He is what we call a multi-instrumentalist playing 19 instruments! Yes 19, no mispelling involved. And he is giving concerts accompanying mute films. He has developed his own technique when it comes to writing the score and reinterpreting the film action. Today, on March 27 we get the chance to better understand his art as he is going to accompany life on the piano and other instruments the comedy "Gone with the train" at the Schnürschuh Theatre in Bremen. Shot in 1997 by the Slovenian director Igor Šterk, "Exspres, ekspres" as this is the original title tells the story of a young man who tries to excape depression after his father dies by taking a train. On his journey, he experiences amazing things, and even gets romantically involved.

Jentsch's live performances are an unique experience. The combination of precise musical skill, and his ability to musically capture the spirit and atmosphere of a film makes his scoring a true delight. In addition to the atmospheric intensity, the changing timbres and styles are promising an entertaining evening.
