VIDEO Mother Bhumi by Chong Keat Aun World Premiere in
Tokyo

The late 1990s, a rural area of northern Malaysia near the Thai border where multiple ethnic groups coexist. Hong Im, widowed, spends her days farming and her nights using magic to help villagers suffering from illness. After a chain of inexplicable events, Hong Im learns an unknown truth about her husband’s death... Director Chong Keat Aun’s new film, following Pavane for an Infant, 2024 TIFF Asian Future section, blends realism and fantasy to depict the rural landscape where the director spent his childhood. The acclaimed star Fan Bingbing, 2010 TIFF Best Actress for Buddha Mountain, takes on a heroine role that completely transforms her previous image. Photos by Laurent Hou
