Donostia Award actor Robert Duvall dies at 95

Robert Duvall made his film debut in 1962 with To Kill a Mockingbird. A decade later, in 1972, he left an indelible mark on cinema with his portrayal of the Consigliere to the fictional Corleone family in The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola’s landmark masterpiece.

In 1979, he delivered one of the most iconic lines in film history — “I love the smell of napalm in the morning” — as Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore in Coppola’s Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now.

Duvall won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1984 for his performance in Tender Mercies.

The actor visited the San Sebastián International Film Festival on several occasions and received the Donostia Award in 2003. The accompanying photographs capture some of his visits to San Sebastián.

“For the world, he was an Academy Award–winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was everything,” his wife said following his passing last Sunday.
Rest in peace.
