As if Improvisation Was an Ethical Necessity

Filmmaker Nicolas Philibert, President of the 2024 Œil d’or Jury, in conversation with Film Programmer & Producer Madeline Robert. Focusing on his films in the world of psychiatry (including the 2023 Golden Bear winner On the Adamant), this conversation will be exploring Philibert’s filmmaking, his instinctive, non-programmatic approach, bearing the concept of encounter at its very core.

Confessions of Editors in Three Acts
  21 MAY, 15:00-16:00 | MAIN STAGE

Structured in three acts, the conversation between Lina Attalah — Journalist and Founding Editor of Mada Masr, a Cairo-based independent news media — and Rasha Salti — Commissioning Editor at Arte France for La Lucarne — will explore the vexing question of reality and perspective, the burden of mediation, and beaming lights that uncover different possibilities of perception and knowledge.

Fighting for the Commons in a Time of Critical Destabilization
  21 MAY, 16:00-17:00 | MAIN STAGE

From a common ground of championing Ernest Cole’s key legacy, Director & Producer Raoul Peck (Ernest Cole: Lost and Found, Special Screening, Cannes 2024) and Dominic Asmall Willsdon, Executive Director of IDA, will expand on serving the common good through filmmaking, curatorial work, advocacy organizations — and battling to guarantee it remains possible in the threatened contemporary publicness.

Celebrate tomorrow's doc filmmakers!

The jury, composed of Opal H. Bennett (Senior Producer (POV) & EP (POV Shorts), American Documentary), Rasmus Steen (Head of Documentary, IMS) and Ana Alice de Morais (Artistic Co-Director, RIDM), will announce the 7 Docs-in-Progress Awards!

These prizes are comprised of:

  • IEFTA Docs-in-Progress Awards: €10,000 cash prize and project follow-up by IEFTA – The International Emerging Film Talent Association.
  • Al Jazeera Documentary Award: Al Jazeera Documentary comes in as co-producer, with a minimum contribution of $15,000.
  • Post-Production Award: €5,000 grant in post-production services, thanks to the participation of Hiventy, Technical Partner of the Festival de Cannes.
  • Rise and Shine Award:  For a project with the best international potential (and with no sales agent attached yet). The award consists of a €3,000 cash prize awarded to the producer of the project.
  • Alphapanda Award: Two sessions of marketing consultancy with Alphapanda team members and the creation of an artwork for the film.
  • Think-Film Impact Award: A strategic impact workshop and an impact pitching coaching session, given by the Think-Film Impact Production team.
  • DAE – Documentary Association of Europe Award: Free one-year memberships for the team, with all associated benefits, and a rough cut consultation with one of DAE’s senior advisors.

Ce n'est qu'un au revoir

In partnership with ACID Cannes 2024, join us at Cinéma Les Arcades and close this memorable Doc Day with the documentary film Ce n'est qu'un au revoir, by Guillaume Brac (Nicolas Anthomé | Bathysphere Productions, France).

Synopsis: Can highschool friendships last a lifetime? One thing's for sure: before long, Aurore, Nours, Jeanne, Diane and the others will say goodbye to their boarding rooms, swimming in the Drôme and parties in the mountains. Louison will cut his dreads and the little family will break up. 

For some of them, it's not the first time, and it hurts even more...

The award ceremony will be followed by a cocktail reception. 

The Jury of L'Œil d'or - The Documentary Award 2024 is chaired by Nicolas Philibert and consists of Dyana Gaye, Elise Jalladeau, Francis Legault, and Mina Kavani. 

 

A Festival accreditation is required to access the Palais des Festivals. Reservations are nominal and subject to availability.
